A excellent, very scarce example of a Norwich Connecticut pewter plate, probably by Samuel Danforth 1793-1803. Samuel was born in 1772 and apprenticed under his father John, before striking out on his own in 1793. He had his own touch marks but also incorporated the Norwich scroll mark used by his father. Whereas John typically used the Norwich touch singly with his hallmarks, this plate has the Norwich touches double struck. Also, very faintly opposite below the Norwich strikes, possible remains of the Samuel Danforth name touch (J-102) are slightly visible under decent lighting (see photos), hence the attribution to Samuel. Samuel sold his business in 1803 and then moved South, likely working as a journeyman, where his name pops up occasionally working for North and Rowe in Augusta Georgia. Samuel kept moving and passed away in Ellsworth Ohio in 1827.
The 8-5/16" plate is in excellent condition, with wear, minor pitting, scratches and signs of use
