Joseph Danforth Fine 7 7/8" American Pewter Plate

Joseph Danforth worked from 1780-1788. Current scholarship, based on touch mark placement evidence and other information, suggests that the plate was more likely made by Jonathan and William Danforth after Joseph's death in 1788. The brothers carried on their older brother's business until about 1794, when William obtained his own touch marks and struck out on his own. Jonathan got out of the pewter business.

The plate is double struck in the center of the plate with Joseph's lion-in-gateway touch, but there are no hallmarks. Note the re-strike of the touch marks. The plate shows no usage wear, with evident turnings.
