Interesting Richard Lee Unmarked Old English Type Porringer, 1788-1820

This is a very interesting and educational example of an Old English Handle type taster size porringer by Richard Lee, Sr. or Richard Lee, Jr., 1788-1820.

The handle mold was not attached properly to the bowl and the mold leaked, creating excess metal to leak out at the bowl juncture and the handle at the right side piercings. With the leakage, the handle didn't fill in properly, as can be seen more clearly on the back. Pewterers were not perfectionists and, occasionally, a less than perfectly manufactured piece made it out to the public.

Another unusual feature, the bowl side also has beautifully inscribed initials 'AG'. Despite the manufacturing defects, the owners thought it proper to inscribe the piece.

Aside from a previous attempt to fix a small dent in the raised boss, the porringer is in very good condition. Bowl diameter 2 1/2".
