A good American painted tinware hanging matchsafe or match holder from Connecticut c. 1830-1845.
Matchsafes, given their useful function, did not often survive in good condition. The fluted matchsafe's
asphaltum japanning shows wear but the pinwheel decoration at the hanging hole and the white-banded green
and red brush stroke decoration is largely intact.
Although the front is darkened with age and exposure, the back of the match holder shows the beautiful original
honey gold asphaltum color.
The matchsafe measures approximately 7-5/8" tall by 4-3/4" wide.
