A wonderful American painted tinware sheet tray from Connecticut, New York, or possibly Maine, c. 1830-1860.
In original condition, the tray retains a nice surface and was probably used as a card tray.
Eight-sided (also known as a coffin lid) with an upright gallery rim and nicely decorated with cross-hatching and a cherry, there is very little paint loss.
A similar shaped tray can be found in The Art of the Tinsmith by DeVoe, page 172. Another example is can be found in The History & Folklore of American Country Tinware 1700-1900 by Coffin, page 113. The tray measures a bit more than 6" x 9".
